Heartland Healthy Neighborhood and Capital City Wellness will dedicate “The Kansas Sunflowers” bike rack sculpture on Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m. in the lobby of the Unicare building, 825 Kansas Avenue next to Cumulus Broadcasting. (the actual sculpture is in front of Cumulus)
The dedication culminates a design contest sponsored by Capital City Wellness. Leslie Curley of Topeka was the winning designer. “The sculpture doubles as an art piece and a bike rack,” said Jennifer Church of Capital City Wellness. “The bike rack sculpture creates an interesting and visually appealing environment for walkers while encouraging more bicyclists.” Be sure to stop by during the artwalk and see this new addition to our downtown!

Alice C Sabatini Gallery, One Night Only! The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library "The 4th Annual Edible Books Festival" will be in the Marvin Auditorium. In the Sabatini Gallery: “Hyphen-ated” an exhibit featuring internationally shown Topeka artists Larry Peters and Barbara Waterman-Peters, opens for First Friday. Featuring artwork with a psychological point of view, this exhibit examines life’s difficulties and depicts somber topics, including the Holocaust and societal oppression of women.

Beauchamp’s Gallery, Westboro Mart, 3113 S Huntoon will host an artist’s reception for our Easter show “Christian Themes V, Contemporary Visions”. The exhibit will include artworks by regional artists Mike Henry, Phil Hershberger, Jim Munce, Stephanie Munoz O’Neil, Judith Sabatini, Bob Swain & Janlynn Nesbitt Tucker. Also showing work will be Missouri artists Mike Buesking and Nora Othic, Virginia artist Barbara Fast, Texas artist Jim Janknegt, and Tennessee artist Tony Novak.

Concealed/Revealed Art Auction preview, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, 4775 SW 21st Preview the artwork that has been donated by local artists to be auctioned on April 23rd at The YWCA's 7th Annual Concealed Revealed Art Auction. Donors include Allison Trembly, Glenda Taylor, Dan Coburn, Stephanie Lanter, Carrie Powell, Mary Dorsey Wanless, Marguerite Perret, Sara O'Keefe, Justin and Bailey Marable, Audrey Kawasaki, and Carrie McDougal. Art created by women and children staying at the shelter will also be showcased. The display will be available from 5-8pm, with light refreshments. DeShazer Studios, 911 S Kansas Ave is hosting art students from Shawnee Heights High School for the April First Fridays Art Walk. Rachel Seuell will be showing paintings, Dylan Clemmons will be showing film and digital photography, Briana Caspers is showing ceramics and Raven Smith will be showing photography.
The Fibre Gallery, located in the lower level of the Collective, 3121 SW Huntoon This exhibition space has expanded its selection to include weaving, "soft" sculpture and quilting in addition to works on silk and some apparel, such as scarves, tops and unisex shirts. This is a regional collection of artists' work from Topeka as well as surrounding communities. Future exhibitions will include artists from neighboring states as well, and local fiber artists are invited to submit consignment work for consideration. A Grand Opening is being planned for early summer, but a preview of this new collection will be on display during the April First Friday Art Walk. Refreshments will be provided.
Glass Expressions, 1250 SW Oakley, is hosting two local artists on April 2nd. Dick Wentzel, of Topeka will show and explain the process of lampwork that he uses to create his beautiful glass marbles. Also showing is Cecilia Labora with her new collection of spring season lampwork bead jewelry. Come and enjoy her entire collection of one-of-a-kind art pieces.

Legacy Community Arts Center, 1315 SW 6th Street, Suite D “DRAWING ON THE CONTOURS OF THE MIND: An Exhibition of Personal Drawings by the late Robert. E. Ault, Artist, Art Teacher and Art Therapist” This is a special exhibit featuring self-portrait contour drawings by the late Robert E. Ault. This exhibition will appeal to art lovers and people interested in psychology and the process of art therapy. The show marks the second anniversary of the art center and recognizes the legacy of Robert Ault, long-time Topeka artist and nationally regarded expert in art therapy, a field he helped pioneer. LCAC, an instructional art studio, was started by art students of the late Mr. Ault. Also showing: drawings by “Grandma” Elizabeth Layton.
Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University Works by 33 Washburn University students will be on exhibit in the 2010 student art show open with a reception for the artists. The students take the responsibility for installing their works in the Museum and producing wall labels. The exhibit gives the students and community an opportunity to see these works in a professional setting. Juror for the exhibit was Royce Smith, Assistant Professor of Art History at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. The exhibit features 50 works in a variety of media including: painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, graphic design and mixed media.
Also showing: “Ms. Homeland Security: Illegal Entry Tent Dress” Artists Robin Lasser and Adrienne Pao merge a dress tent sculpture and large-scale color photographs with a companion landscape to construct a fashion of place. Each piece of wearable architecture references specific body and land politics pertaining to the place and culture in which they are installed. Modes of female representation are addressed through the garment/structure. In the gallery, the tent brings the experience of the referenced landscape back to the audience.
Last chance to see, “Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad,” which will be jointly featured at Brown v. Board of Education.
Ongoing- if you haven’t stopped by to see “Stickworks” by Patrick Dougherty, take advantage of the beautiful weather this weekend and visit the amazing sculpture located in front of the Mulvane. Don’t forget! You and your kids can always visit the ARTLab in the lower level of the Mulvane during First Fridays.

Her work may be identified by the freedom of motion or abstract elements present. Unlimited by media, Bobbie explores and uses a variety of watercolor, pastel, and paint. Come by to meet this Topeka gem and enjoy her beautiful artwork.
Southwind Gallery, 3074 SW 29th Street- opens its new spring art exhibit with an artist’s reception for Ethereal Visions of the Flint Hills: A one-man show featuring the work of Michael Duane. Fascinated with Kansas weather, Michael Duane’s paintings capture the magnificent Kansas Flint Hills with the sharp contrasts of an oncoming thunderstorm or a simple far-off cloud. Working in the pastel medium, Duane has developed a technique that involves rubbing the pastels into the paper, creating smooth shapes. His distinctive style provides an ethereal sensation, creating a countryside filled with the pleasure of quilted comfort.
Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy, 3028 SW 8th Ave (the corner of 8th & Oakley) is featuring twelve pieces of art in its main lobby inspired by their production of Curtains and donated by eight local artists from the Friends of Tinkham Veale's TV Up Down Gallery. The photographs, paintings, and three-dimensional art are being auctioned off as part of TCTA's lead up to it's historical 75th Season. The show closes this weekend, so don't miss your opportunity to see the performance and try your luck at taking home one of the pieces. Art will be on display from 5:30-8:00pm. Warehouse 414, 414 SE 2nd featuring Kim Sandefur Horse Series Equus “Tribute to the Horse”, fabric panel murals. Also showing Anthony S. Bush “photography on a curve” Bush is a chief photographer at the Topeka Capital-Journal and also teaches basic photography for Washburn Tech. His work is primarily photojournalism with a mix of feature and abstract. Plus a special guest artist from the WU Tech Students.
The Woodward Inns on Fillmore, 12th & Fillmore The Max Gallery at the Woodward Inns on Fillmore and, Polish Pottery at The Woodward. The Max Gallery is currently featuring the art of ESU professor, the late Richard Stauffer glass blower, sculptor, and amateur archeologist. The Max Gallery at the Woodward Inns on Fillmore occupies the main floor of The Woodward Max. Polish Pottery will be exhibited at The Woodward.
